Tiger and Dragon, Episode 6

The Actors

Rape-Huggists: Nagase Tomoya et al ♂
Rape-Huggee: Nameless extras ♀

The Context
The boys are on a night out in the town, and are looking to get some femular attention. Being Japan, there is always a snack bar/cabaret nearby where annoying girls are always ready to provide inane conversation, overpriced drinks and perhaps a handjob for the right price. So they are in the bar when Nagase's character gets an important phonecall. Being the leader of the group, everyone is waiting on him, and when he hangs up, all hell breaks loose.

The Result
This is the only gang rape-hug I have ever seen in a Japanese (or any other) dorama, and I hope it is the last. It significantly does not result in anything (a lawsuit comes to mind), as the scene immediately cuts to the advertisements. I somehow doubt that Coca Cola would be pleased with being the first thing people see after a violent group rape-hug.

The Depiction

It begins with Tomoya hanging up his phone, standing on the sofa and throwing off his blazer as he yells his battle cry to the men "Sorry to keep you waiting [for group rape-huggery]". Then the camera pans out as the men attack in formation around the six waitresses, form a human chain and start thrusting their pelvises towards the centre in a sychronised fashion. Note how all the women are cowering in fear.
The entire sequence is very animalistic and reminds one of the age-old battle in nature of fish and dolphins. The females here are the fish, who when threatened form a bait ball as a last ditch defensive measure as individuals are more likely to be attacked than groups. However, the dolphin has evolved hunting techniques to exploit this behaviour by circling the prey so they form a tighter ball making for easy pickings.

Note that the entire sequence is filmed in one shot. I just hope that this means they needed only one attempt at this scene.

Awkwardometor ☆☆☆☆☆

Tiger and Dragon has previously been feaured twice before on J-Dorama Rape-hugs, and both times they were actually used in a fashion that had some geniune humour to it. It is a very difficult line to tread, and in this case they failed horribly. This above scene is so horrific that I will never forget where I was when I saw it first. Overall Tiger and Dragon is a very good dorama, and this was very-much out of character. It was not, however, out of character with Nagase Tomoya who seems to be quite comfortable with rape-huggery. Every dorama I have seen with him in it he offends, which leads me to think that perhaps it is stated somewhere in his contract.

Video

Watch the carnage of the scene, the battle cries, and the cutaway to the commercials. Still feel like having a refreshing Coca Cola?

Last Christmas, Episode 11

Apologies for the belated finale of Rape-hugMas. Incidentally, this year there happened to be another busy holiday that got in the way. But I think you will agree that the wait will have been worth it - this is a true Christmas classic Rape-hug that everyone (i.e. noone) will enjoy.

The Actors

Rape-Huggist: Tamaki Hiroshi ♂
Rape-Huggee: Katase Ritsuko ♀

The Context
This is a repeat rape-hug between these same two characters, and this time Tamaki is far more assertive. That's the thing with rape-hugs: it's like cocaine in that you push the limits of humanity further each time. Although these characters are not the leading pair, their romantic storyline - if it can be called that (it can't) - is a running thread and it will now be finally resolved.

The Result
She docilely accepts the advance, people watching swoon at the romantic gesture (?) and most importantly the dorama ends and I never have to pretend to care about these two again.

The Depiction
The event takes place in a lobby in front of a giant white Christmas tree, in plain sight of many people. She is actually prepared to finally break up with him, but that is bullshit, I mean, who breaks up with someone in front of a giant albino Christmas tree? So she turns to walk away when he tells her to stop. Yes, he "tells" her to stop, barking the command, but really, she is a smart woman who knows his rape-hugging history and is playing Jedi mind tricks on him.
Plucked up with confidence, Tamaki starts trutting around saying incredibly douchebaggy things like:
"I hate women like you"
"You are bothering me" and
"There are women everywhere"
Then he is so overcome with blind rape-hug rage that he cuts himself off mid-sentence and lunges at her, like he is some sick fuck who gets off on scaring women.

Then, in an insult to all women's taste in men, all of the females in the vicinity pout and swoon in despair when they see Hiroshi finally commit himself to a single woman and suddenly be taken off the marketplace. Do Japanese women actually think he is a good catch? What am I missing? It's scenes like this that make me despair at the state of humanity.

Awkwardometor
The elements for a five-star rape-hug are in place, with the repeat offender Tamaki Hiroshi doing some of his best work so far on J-Dorama Rape-hugs. There is threatening pre-offence speech, the jumping-spider-like attack and the wide-open space with so many people looking on and thinking that this is not only okay, but desireable. However, as mentioned above, she obviously wanted this to happen (if not orchestrate the whole event). She basically covered herself with lamb's blood and walked into the lion enclosure at the zoo. Still, that far from nullifies the legitimacy or awkwardness of this atrocious scene. We believe here that eliminating rape-hugs from doramas includes more than just name-and-shaming tactics, but education and empowerment of possible victims. Namely, we all need to spread the word that "not no does not mean yes". And that is my only thing on my Rape-hugMas wishlist this year.

Video

Watch the entire sequence with his douchebaggy false confident walk and innane and repulsive speech. Hiroshi is the worst.

Have a happy and safe 2013 everyone!
